August 28 CLASSIC MOVIE REVIEWSEvery once in a while you come across an old movie from way back when and it feels so great. That is what this review is all about. "This Gun For Hire" is the first I want to mention. It is Film Noir at its finest. It stars Alan Ladd in his breakout role as cold blooded professional killer Raven who has been double-crossed by his client. Veronica Lake is beautiful nightclub singer Ellen who is spying on her corrupt boss. Robert Preston is police Lt. Michael Crane out to capture Raven and to get Ellen's love. Murder, betrayal, revenge, along with creative black and white photography blend together to make this a movie to die for! It is not rated. Made in 1942,running time is 81 minutes. It is available on DVD from the Universal Noir Collection. Referring to Ladd, the DVD jacket says,"He's dynamite with a gun or a girl." Believe it! The "Charlie Chan" collection is another gem I have discovered from the golden age of black and white movies. So far,it is a five volume set available on DVD with Warner Oland as Charlie Chan in the first three volumes and Sidney Toler portraying Charlie Chan in volumes four and five. Most of these movies run slightly over an hour and make for an excellent after dinner treat. Chan travels the world hunting down crooks helping police put them in prison. And of course,he is always helped with one or more of his sons. Turn the lights down low, load one of the Charlie Chan's adventure into your DVD and enjoy the show! That's all for today. As always,I'm constantly on the lookout for films old and new to bring to your attention. I report. You decide! Have a great day!! Comments (1)
